Board Membership Details

Friends of Roxhill is actively seeking new board members for the 26 – 27 school year!

Friends of Roxhill Elementary (FORE) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and is required to have a “Board of Directors” to oversee and support its work.

Interested in joining the board?

Our board members ensure FORE’s work aligns with community priorities and the mission to “building equity for students through fundraising, community building and other projects important for our kids’ school success.” Board members also step up to support the work of FORE in ways that align with their availability, interests, and talents.

Being a member of the FORE board is just one of many great ways to support Roxhill.

FORE’s board is most successful when its members are a diverse representation of the school community—across race, socioeconomic status, gender, grade-level, etc.—and have varied complementary skills and interests.

2025-2026 Board Members

  • Mark R-W – President
  • Margaret S –  Treasurer
  • Amanda K – Secretary
  • Liz H – Garden Chair
  • Daryl F – Board Member
  • Jenny G – Board Member

What makes a good board member?

Any member of the school community has the potential to serve on the board. Ideal board members are:

  • Thoughtful, interested in seeking out input from others, and want to work on behalf of the entire school community, not just their own students and friends
  • Willing to step up and help with FORE and school initiatives as their schedules and abilities allow
  • Excited to contribute their social or professional skills to the school community, including work such as organizing events, fundraising, communicating to the school community, and being a welcoming member of the Roxhill community to the new families

Board members are not required to make monetary donations or be involved in any specific volunteer roles.

Board Member Expectations

There are only a few required expectations for board members:

  • Regularly attend the 1-hour monthly online board meeting
  • Actively read and respond to email threads and WhatsApp conversations between board members
  • Attend most school and FORE events including the monthly community meetings
  • Be willing to engage with other Roxhill families as a warm and welcoming representative of our community
  • Meaningfully contributing to FORE projects and other work that supports the Roxhill community in a way that works with your availability, interests, and skills

Examples of Board Member Work

Examples of work often done by board members (though we need more non-board volunteers to also help with these types of projects!):

  • Organize and promote the Back-to-School and Winter Basic Needs Fundraisers
  • Collect updates for FORE newsletters, and post them to the website and email list
  • Print, cut, and distribute flyers to send home with students
  • Applying for grants or soliciting donations
  • Network with families and pick-up to promote events and projects

  • Recruit, communicate with, and coordinate potential volunteers
  • Plan and put on Skate Night and Family Fun Night
  • Welcome families to the playground playdate
  • Reach out to local organization to participate in school events or support Roxhill in other ways
  • Work with students and staff to make the yearbook
  • Distribute the school directory
  • Plan the ice cream social and represent Friends of Roxhill
  • Work with community organizations and businesses to offer afterschool clubs and classes
  • Organize community outings to local sports games
  • Organize dine-out fundraisers and similar community events
  • Order and set up staff appreciation meals and snacks in the week before school, during Teacher Appreciation Week, and at other times
  • Organize clothing swap
  • Work in and maintain the school garden
  • Order and organize t-shirts
  • One-off special projects such as painting a school mural or building the school playground

Board Structure

The FORE board is made up of 5 – 12 members representing the school community, most often parents and staff. New members are most often added in May and June, though members may be accepted during the school year as space and interest allows.

Among the board members, there are four “officer” positions with official responsibilities:

  • President: Provide oversight of FORE activities and projects, and represent Friends of Roxhill on behalf of the board.
  • Vice President: Support the work of the president and facilitate and organize events when the President is unavailable, as well as, oversee any committees, if there are any.
  • Treasurer: Tracks all spent and received funds, ensures payment of bills and reimbursements, and provides updates on FORE’s budget throughout the year.
  • Secretary: Maintain FORE’s records and take minutes for all meetings.

Other members chair committees which at times include Events, Garden, Communications, Equity & Inclusion, Auction, Budget, and more.

Interested in Joining the Board?

If you are interested in learning more about the board, email friendsofroxhill@gmail.com to learn more.

Please don’t hesitate to get in touch! Reaching out is not a commitment (nor does it guarantee that you join the board). We need members to continue the work of organizing and coordinating support of our amazing, neighborhood school.

If serving on the board isn’t right for you, but you’d still like to be involved, check out our other volunteer opportunities or email us and let us know how you can help. It takes a village to raise a Roxstar.
