Teacher Appreciation, Soccer Saturday at the Park, and more May News & Events!

May has been off to such a beautiful start in Seattle. As we look ahead to our second-to-last month of school, we find opportunities to come together and celebrate in the sun!

Highlights of this month include teacher appreciation week, a very special soccer-filled park meetup, and the book fair with Paper Boat Booksellers.

As you look through this month’s updates, think about whether you’d like to help be a part of planning and supporting things like treats and lunch for our teachers, a fun playdate at the playground, or a community fundraiser to pay for it all. Heck, you could help out by writing this newsletter! Those are just a few of the ways volunteers and board members help support Roxhill. As we start looking ahead to next year, Friends of Roxhill is actively seeking board members and volunteers. If you have any interest, reach out to learn more!

Teacher & Staff Appreciation Week: May 4 – 8

It’s teacher appreciation week, and every day will include a special way we celebrate our teachers who do so much to educate our Roxstars!

  • Monday – Donuts and coffee for all staff, provided by Friends of Roxhill
  • Tuesday – Students bring a flower for your teacher (flowers picked on the way to school are great!)
  • Wednesday – Chipotle lunch bar for all staff, provided by Friends of Roxhill
  • Thursday – Principal Bruno special teacher celebration
  • Friday – Students, make Thank You cards for your teachers!
  • Any day: Families, reach out to your teacher to see if there are ways you can volunteer to support them for the rest of the year
Teacher Appreciation Week: Let's show our wonderful Roxhill teachers some love!

Want to serve? Seeking Board Members for 2026 – 2027!

Friends of Roxhill is actively seeking volunteers interested in joining the board for the upcoming school year! Our board will best serve our school when it represents a diversity of voices, experiences, and interests. Anyone has the potential to join and work on what you care about most including community building, organizing events, or continuing to work on our efforts to improve outdoor space.

We’ve put together information about board membership and current members for those interested in learning more about board member responsibilities and how to join. Contact Mark Root-Wiley, first grade parent and FORE’s board president, at friendsofroxhill@gmail.com if you’re interested!

Want to help but not join the board? More ways to volunteer

You don’t need to join the board to volunteer! We need more help supporting event planning, family outreach and support, communications, volunteer management, fundraising, and more. Get in touch and let us know what ways you want to help.

Walking School Bus now WEDNESDAY – Friday

Start your day strong with Mr. Hakeem and Nurse Ann

Walk to school with your classmates and adult leaders! We leave from the South side of 24th and Holden at 7:20 am sharp – meet us there or join along the way!

Walk the hill with friends!  Bring your family or let them head home to rest. Make new friends, warm up your body and mind for a strong start to the day.

First Fridays of the month always include a special celebration.

Book Far with Paper Boat Booksellers

Thursday & Friday, May 7 & 8, during the school day (the Book Fair will be open till 3:00 on Thursday)
Roxhill Library

Roxhill Elementary Book Fair with Paper Boat Booksellers

We are partnering once again with local bookstore Paper Boat Booksellers for our annual Book Fair, which is a fundraiser for our library. (25% of the proceeds from the Book Fair go to the Library for purchasing new books.)

Students will shop with their classes during the school day on Thursday and Friday; families may shop after school on Thursday until 3:00. The Book Fair ends on Friday at 2:25.

You can set up an e-wallet with a fixed amount of money for your child, which is a great way to ensure that money does not get lost or stolen.

You can also make a donation using the above link. All donated funds will be put into a pot, which will then be divided among all of the Roxhill students who do not have money to buy a book. On Friday, those students will get to select one book from the Book Fair. Our goal is that all students will go home with something from the Book Fair. Paper Boat Booksellers will match any donations families make to this pot of money.

Supporting our community in the face of immigration enforcement

At our February meeting, we joined together to hear from Principal Bruno, Ms. Binkow, and Nurse Ann about how our school will respond to immigration enforcement actions at or near our school. You should know that it is SPS policy to limit access to school grounds and never share any student or family information without a judicial warrant.

We’ve put together a new page on our website to help. It includes:

  • More details about our schools policy for responding to immigrant enforcement
  • Links to resources including Know Your Rights guides and trainings
  • Resources for any families needing support during this difficult time

If your family needs support 💖

We encourage you to contact the front office. There are many resources available and families eager to help.

If you are interested in being involved in efforts to respond to enforcement activity or support our neighbors, email friendsofroxhill@gmail.com to receive potential future information about meetings and requests for support.
